The garden was created in memory of Elijah Gomez. Elijah, age 15, was shot and killed while walking home from school, he was passionate about nature, friends, and family. George Clarke was a close family friend of Elijah’s, and a life long advocate for peace and no-violence. The New York Times Magazine published a Memorial Tribute to Elijah Gomez in their annual feature The Lives They Lived, by author Dwayne Betts which pays tributes to celebrities and famous people who have died over the year, the author’s goal in writing the piece about Elijah was to honor the life of a young man who lost his life too soon due to gun violence.
