“Thanks For Being You” Exhibit. Art work, photography, poetry and prose, of artist, poet, author, sailor, business owner, volunteer, USCG Veteran, and Prime Mover in the Inception of Hygienic Art, George Clarke 1941-2022 of New London, CT, opens Friday, January 27, 2023 5:00 to 8:00 PM-closes Saturday, February 11th 2023. Sara Munro of Studio 33 is inviting the community to display their George Clark art collection pieces in the exhibit, be it a painting, sculpture, mobile, poem, prose, photograph, or any other creative expression created by George, and also that of his good friend, local artist, photographer, and volunteer, Bernard Skrupsky 1945-2022. The gallery would also like to include the public’s art, poetry, prose, or found art, that is inspired by George or Bernard. All ages welcome. The exhibit will present to the public as NFS – Not For Sale, In Private Collection. Individuals may have their pieces available for sale if they choose to but it is not required to participate in the two week exhibit.
There will be a large Memory & Tribute Board set up in the gallery for the public to share their memories, photos, or any expression of remembrance that can be attached to the board. The gallery is providing colorful Sharpies, Gel Pens, Post It Notes, and Tempera Paint in George’s signature palette. Double sided tape, small ziplock bags, colorful push pins, and paper clips will be on hand for attaching mementos. We invite attendees to take a photo with their phone of their tributes posted on the board and share them on social media. Your share may be included in a future mural being planned! We are having live music by local musician’s in the gallery on the 27th and 28th, and a new Mocktail named the “Varuna Van” will be served, created for the occasion!
The exhibit is free to the public, a donation jar will be available for those who wish to make a donation for Eli’s Garden of Healing – A Healing Garden For Victims Of Violence in Hamden, CT. The garden was created in memory of Elijah Gomez. Elijah, age 15, was shot and killed while walking home from school, he was passionate about nature, friends, and family. George Clarke was a close family friend of Elijah’s, and a life long advocate for peace and no-violence. The New York Times Magazine published a Memorial Tribute to Elijah Gomez in their annual feature The Lives They Lived, by author Dwayne Betts which pays tributes to celebrities and famous people who have died over the year, the author’s goal in writing the piece about Elijah was to honor the life of a young man who lost his life too soon due to gun violence.
